Comida tailandesa - O que eu aprendi até agora / Thai food - What I have learned so far

O menu de um restaurante tailandes terá pratos da culinária tradicional, aquela em que as receitas são passadas de geração em geração e da culinária moderna, receitas mais atuais que geralmente foi influenciada por outra cultura.

The menu of a thai restaurant will have dishes of traditional cuisine, one in which the recipes are passed from generation to generation and modern cuisine, usually influenced by another culture.

Os tailandeses não costumam comer sozinhos, como já expliquei no post sobre o ‘churrasco’ eles fazem as refeições em grupos, seja com amigos ou familiares e dividem a comida. Para mim, depois de 10 anos morando em Londres foi bem ‘estranho’ sentar em uma mesa e dividir tudo com todos.

Thai people do not usually eat alone, as I explained in the post about the BBQ they eat meals in groups, either with friends or family and share the food. For me, after 10 years living in London it was very 'strange' to sit at a table and share everything with everyone.

No café da manhã come-se uma receita com arroz ou sopa. Ate hoje no conheci nenhum tailandes de coma ou goste de pão, na verdade acho que eles até acham estranho essa nossa paixão por pão.

For breakfast they eat a dish with rice or soup. Up to now I haven't  met any thai that enjoy eating bread.  Actually I think they even find it strange  our passion for bread.

Diferente de nós farangs (farang é a palavra que os tailandeses usam para generalizar os nascidos fora da Tailandia) a comida aqui não é separada em doce ou salgada. A culinaria Tailandesa presenteia o nosso paladar com cinco sabores na mesma receita: salgado, doce, azedo, amargo e picante. 

Unlike us farangs (farang is the word that the Thais use to generalize the ones born out of Thailand) the food here is not divided in sweet or savoury. The Thai culinary presents our taste buds with five flavours in the same recipe: salty, sweet, sour, bitter and spicy.

          
Os tailandeses não comem com chop sticks (palitinhos). Eles usam a colher na mão direita e o garfo na mão esquerda e nem adianta procurar, você não vai achar a faca. Parece estranho eu sei, mas com o tempo acostuma tanto que nem sinto mas falta da faca.

Thais do not eat with chop sticks. They use the spoon in their right hand and the fork in the left hand and don't even waste time looking, you will not find a knife. It seems strange I know, but I am so used to it by now.

O povo tailandes sempre termina a comida do prato. Eles acreditam que o desperdicio do arroz tras ma sorte.

The Thai people always finish the food on their plate. They believe that the waste of rice brings bad luck.

O doce mais popular na Tailandia é o Khao Niao Mamuang que nada mais é do que um arroz doce com pedaços de manga. Como os tailandeses geralmente não comem sobremesa, esse prato é geralmente consumido como um lanche da tarde.

The most popular sweet in Thailand is Khao Niao Mamuang, a sweet sticky rice with mango pieces. As the Thais do not usually eat dessert, this dish is usually eaten as an afternoon snack.

Não importa quanto chique um restaurante tailandes seja, a comida nunca será servida ao mesmo tempo mas sim na medida que ficar pronta. Geralmente quando o frango for servido, o arroz já acabou faz tempo...

No matter how fancy a restaurant is, the food will never be served at the same time but insofar as it is ready. Usually when the chicken is served, rice ended a long time ago...

Seja em um restaurante ou na casa de um amigo, a cada prato servido eles perguntam: “aroy mai?” que significa: é gostoso ou não? E a resposta: aroy para gostoso ou aroy mak para muito gostoso. E nem adianta se incomodar com a regularidade da pergunta, os tailandeses tem muito orgulho da sua culinaria e realmente querem saber se o farang gostou.

Whether in a restaurant or at a friend's house, every dish served they ask, "Aroy Mai?" Meaning: it tastes good or not? And the answer: Aroy for tasty or Aroy mak to very good. And no point in bothering with the regularity of the question, the Thais are very proud of their culinary and really want to know if the farang  liked.

E para terminar, algo que aprendi e levo comigo: os tailandeses normalmente não reclamam da comida. Eles acreditam que quem cozinhou fez com o coração e quem ofereceu deu o melhor que tinha.

And finally, something I learned and will take with me: Thais do not normally complain about the food. They believe that whoever cooked did with the heart and has offered the best he had.
